One of a selection of Japanese photography books we exhibiting. Many which are listed in Bertolotti's "Book of Nudes" and Kaneko & Vartanian's "Japanese Photobooks".
Les Maitresses

The only complete work of Jules-Georges dit Jean Floux (1855-1892), French poet, journalist, and member of the Montmartre group Le Chat Noir. This copy inscribed by Floux to Benjamin Constant (1845-1902), one of the illustrators, and in a unique art nouveau binding signed by Louis Deze (1857-1930). Deze bindings are rare with many destroyed during World War II. The Mistresses is a “collection full of exquisite verses and promises that the author would certainly have kept, if the cruel death had not come to strike him in full youth” (Bertrand Millanvoye: Anthologie des poètes de Montmartre).

Windsor Locks, CT: C.H. Dexter and Sons, n.d. circa 1895
Trade catalogue: from the paper mill of C.H. Dexter & Sons, established in the early 1800s, with examples of nineteen colour paper samples, beautifully illustrated in the style of art nouveau.
Stationery fetish aside, this is an important document in the development of printing history, with historical and cultural significance.
Quarto, bound in pictorial wrappers, sewn, original ties intact. rubbed on rear panel and nicked at edges, a very good copy indeed, clean and unmarked within.

Number 1 of 85 copies of the deluxe issue on hand-made paper, signed by T.S. Eliot (of which 75 copies were offered for sale).
GOULD, John. A Monograph of the Macropodidæ, or Family of Kangaroos...London, 1841-2.

The first edition, all published, complete as issued in the original printed boards, and extremely rare. Like Gould’s other monumental books on Australian natural history the Macropodidæ was issued by subscription. The Prospectus lists just eighty-four names, which must account for the book’s rarity on the market today.

Volcano with Blue Lake and Plains 1979 by Shay Docking

Volcanic landscape by this important artist, often featured in exhibitions in Public Galleries in Australia and New Zealand but still little known in her home state. Shay Docking (1928 - 1998) was born in Warrnambool and grew up at Tower Hill. Her views of Tower Hill are in the Warrnambool Gallery collection. This was from her Volcanic Plains Series 1979.

Both editions were privately published by Noma in very small print runs. Laid in are the receipt for the purchase of the books at Noma dated 6 September 2007; a menu and two table cards.
Nomen / Noh Masks

A beautifully presented collection of 180 plates of masks used in the classical Japanese dance-drama Noh. Each plate, photographed by Naomi Maki, is mounted in an individual folder with tissue guard, housed in a portfolio case, and includes an index sheet. An accompanying explanatory volume written by Yasuo Nakamura goes into detail on the subject, as well as containing black and white photographs of the reverse sides of the masks.
